HUNTERSVILLE, NC (April 20, 2023) – The Southern HUNTERSVILLE, NC (April 20, 2023) – The Southern Professional Hockey League on Thursday announced that Justin MacDonald of the Knoxville Ice Bears has been selected as the SPHL Most Valuable Player in a vote of league representatives.

MacDonald captured the 2022-2023 Kevin Swider Leading Scorer Award, leading the SPHL with 79 points. In addition, MacDonald led the league in goals (34), assists (45 – tied), power play goals (13), and second in power play points (31). The Newmarket, ON native, was also a two-time SPHL Player of the Month award winner in January and February.

MacDonald becomes the fifth Most Valuable Player award winner in Knoxville’s history and is the first since Berkley Scott won the award in the 2017-18 season.

HUNTERSVILLE, NC (April 18, 2023) – The Southern HUNTERSVILLE, NC (April 18, 2023) – The Southern Professional Hockey League (SPHL) on Tuesday announced that Trevor Gorsuch of the Evansville Thunderbolts has been selected as the SPHL Goaltender of the Year in a vote of league representatives.

Gorsuch led SPHL goaltenders in goals against average (2.26) and save percentage (0.936). Gorsuch, a native of St. Charles MO, also finished third in shutouts (two – tied) and fifth in wins (15).

This is the first-ever Goaltender of the Year award for Evansville.

Congratulations to Craig Simchuk of the @bhambulls Congratulations to Craig Simchuk of the @bhambulls for being named this years SPHL Coach of the Year! 

HUNTERSVILLE, NC (April 14, 2023) – The Southern Professional Hockey League (SPHL) announced that Craig Simchuk of the Birmingham Bulls has been selected as the SPHL Coach of the Year in a vote of league representatives.

Evansville’s Jeff Bes finished second in the voting.

Simchuk led Birmingham to the largest single-season point increase (36-point increase) in SPHL history as the Bulls went from a 42-point season in 2021-22 to a 78-point season this year, breaking the old record also held by the Bulls when they had a 30-point increase from 2017-18 to 2018-19. The Bulls also had a league-high 21 home wins.

Now in his third season behind the Bulls bench, Simchuk joins Jamey Hicks as the only Birmingham coaches to capture the award.

The SPHL will announce its Defensemen of the Year on Monday.
HUNTERSVILLE, NC (April 11, 2023) – The Southern HUNTERSVILLE, NC (April 11, 2023) – The Southern Professional Hockey League (SPHL) announced today that Jack Berry of the Peoria Rivermen has been named the Warrior/SPHL Player of the Week for April, 3-9.

Berry posted a 3-0-0 record, 1.34 goals against average, and a 0.932 save percentage as Peoria clinched the William B. Coffey Trophy as regular season champions. This is Peoria’s fifth regular season championship and the first since the 2019 season.

On Tuesday, Berry locked down his first of three wins as he stopped 19 of 21 shots faced, including 12 of 13 in the second period against Quad City as the Rivermen went on to win 4-2. On Friday, Berry carried a shutout into the final five minutes of the game before Pensacola finally slotted one past him. Berry finished the game stopping 21 of 22 shots as the Rivermen defeated the Ice Flyers 4-1. In Saturday’s regular-season finale, Berry once again turned in a near-perfect performance against the Ice Flyers as he stopped 15 of 16 shots he faced and for the second consecutive night, helped Peoria to a 4-1 victory and a regular-season title to close out the regular season.

The Holly, MI native posted a career-high 10 wins, and 2.00 goals against average while also having a 0.911 save percentage for the Rivermen. This is Peoria’s fifth SPHL Player of the Week award, the most of any SPHL franchise in 2022/23.
HUNTERSVILLE, NC (April 12, 2023) – The Southern HUNTERSVILLE, NC (April 12, 2023) – The Southern Professional Hockey League (SPHL) announced today that Bailey Conger of the Knoxville Ice Bears has been named the Warrior/SPHL Player of the Month for March/April.

Conger tallied 24 points, 12 goals, and 12 assists, and had a +7 rating over 13 games played for the Ice Bears last month.

Conger recorded a point in each of the 13 games he appeared in during the month, including eight multi-point performances. He had three multi-goal performances with his high point total coming in a game against the Macon Mayhem on March 25 when he tallied two first-period goals and added two assists as Knoxville went on to defeat Macon 8-6. The Boise, ID native ranked third on the Ice Bears in points (54), goals (25), and fourth in assists (29). This is the third consecutive Player of the Month award for Knoxville, as they took home three of the five Player of the Month awards in the 2022/23 season.

Conger has been a vital part in helping Knoxville keep pace in the SPHL playoff hunt after Justin MacDonald went on the 21-day IR at the beginning of March. Knoxville finished sixth in the SPHL standings and begins their run at the SPHL Presidents Cup Championship on Thursday as they hit the road to face off against the third-seeded Huntsville Havoc.

HUNTERSVILLE, NC (April 4, 2023) – The Southern HUNTERSVILLE, NC (April 4, 2023) – The Southern Professional Hockey League (SPHL) announced today that Mitch Atkins of the Pensacola Ice Flyers has been named the Warrior/SPHL Player of the Week for March, 27- April 2.


Atkins scored once, picked up seven assists, and was +7 in two games as Pensacola split games against the Huntsville Havoc last weekend.

On Friday, Atkins got the Ice Flyers started as he picked up the first assist on the opening goal just 1:12 into the first period. He would add a goal at the 8:42 mark of the period which saw Pensacola take a 2-1 lead into the intermission. In the third period, Atkins picked up his second assist, this time on the game-tying goal with just 31 seconds left to tie the score at three. However, the Ice Flyers would drop the opener to the Havoc in overtime by a final of 4-3. On Saturday, Atkins wasted no time getting his name on the scoresheet, picking up the first of five assists just 40 seconds into the game. He would add three more first-period assists as Pensacola jumped out to a 4-2 lead at the first break. After Huntsville roared back in the third period to tie the score at 4-4, Atkins found Ivan Bondarenko for the game-winning goal and his fifth assist of the game as the Ice Flyers would hang on for a 5-4 victory over the Havoc. For the weekend, Atkins was involved in every goal that was scored by Pensacola, including picking up a team-record, five assists on Saturday. His five assist game also tied the second most assists in a single game by a single player in SPHL history.
 


The Kitchener, ON native is third on the Ice Flyers in points (46), and assists (37) all of which are career highs for the Center.

HUNTERSVILLE, NC (March 28, 2023) – The Southern HUNTERSVILLE, NC (March 28, 2023) – The Southern Professional Hockey League (SPHL) announced today that CJ Hayes of the Macon Mayhem has been named the Warrior/SPHL Player of the Week for March, 21-26.

Hayes scored two goals, picked up four assists, and was +4 in three games as Macon split games against the Knoxville Ice Bears and defeated the third-place Huntsville Havoc to close out the weekend.

On Friday, Hayes was a part of the Mayhem’s onslaught on offense. He picked up two assists, the latter coming on the game-tying goal in the third period as Macon defeated Knoxville 7-5. On Saturday, Hayes did all of his work in the first period, picking up two assists before scoring a goal with 4:46 remaining that put Macon ahead 4-3. The Ice Bears, however, would come back to win 8-6. In Sunday’s bout with Huntsville, Hayes once again scored, this time in the third period, putting the Mayhem ahead 3-1. Macon would get a game-winning goal from Rhett Kingston on the powerplay with 2:32 remaining to secure the win for Macon as they defeated Huntsville 5-4.

The Margate, FL native is tied for third on the Mayhem in points (28), fourth in goals, (12), and tied for fourth in assists (16). This is Macon’s second Warrior/SPHL Player of the Week award this season.

HUNTERSVILLE, NC (March 21, 2023) – The Southern HUNTERSVILLE, NC (March 21, 2023) – The Southern Professional Hockey League (SPHL) announced today that Michael Herringer and Conor O’Brien of the Fayetteville Marksmen have been named the Warrior/SPHL Co-Players of the Week for March 13-19.

Herringer and O’Brien combined to go 3-0-0 with Herringer posting a 2-0-0 record, 1.14 gaa, and a 0.962 save percentage while O’Brien went 1-0-0 with a shutout, 1.50 gaa (was replaced in Thursday’s game after 1st period), and a 0.935 save percentage. 


During Thursday’s game, Herringer came on in relief of O’Brien after two first-period goals. He went on to be a brick wall in between the pipes as he stopped all 20 shots he faced in the final three periods including overtime. In the shootout, he turned away four of the six shots he faced as Fayetteville completed the comeback over Pensacola 3-2 in front of a sold-out SPHL record 9,500 kids on education day. The win was one to remember for Herringer as it was his first career professional victory. On Friday night, Herringer turned away 30/32 shots in his first career start in net as the Marksmen jumped out to a 5-0 lead before eventually defeating Pensacola 5-2. 



In Sunday’s matinee, O’Brien was phenomenal as the Netminder stopped all 19 shots he faced as he picked up his second shutout of the season in the Marksmen’s 2-0 victory over the Pensacola Ice Flyers. With the victory, Fayetteville completed the weekend sweep of the Ice Flyers and moved ahead of them in the standings as the race for the final playoff spots heats up with only six games remaining.



On the season, Herringer who hails from Comax, BC has a 2-0-0 record with a 0.99 gaa, and a 0.966 save percentage over three games played this season. Conor O’Brien who is from Pinellas Park, FL is 6-5-2 this season with a 3.02 gaa, and a 0.910 save percentage and two shutouts for the Marksmen.

HUNTERSVILLE, NC (March 14, 2023) – The Southern HUNTERSVILLE, NC (March 14, 2023) – The Southern Professional Hockey League (SPHL) announced today that Aaron Huffnagle of the Evansville Thunderbolts has been named the Warrior/SPHL Player of the Week for March, 6-12.

Huffnagle scored a goal, picked up five assists, and was +4 in three games as Evansville swept two games against the Macon Mayhem and defeated the league-leading Peoria Rivermen to close out the weekend.

On Friday, Huffnagle was a part of the Thunderbolt's onslaught on offense. He picked up two second-period assists before adding his third and final assist in the third period as Evansville defeated Macon 4-3 in overtime. On Saturday, Huffnagle assisted on the game's second goal as the Thunderbolts shut out Macon 3-0. In Sunday’s matinee, Huffnagle scored his first goal of the weekend on the powerplay in the first period to help get Evansville out in front 2-0. After Peoria tied the game at 2-2, Huffnagle put the finishing touches on his six-point weekend with an assist on the overtime winner as the Thunderbolts pushed their winning streak to four games with a 3-2 win over the Rivermen.

The Marlton, NJ native leads the Thunderbolts in points (47), and assists (37) while being tied for fifth in goals (10). This is Huffnagle's second Warrior/SPHL Player of the Week award this season.

HUNTERSVILLE, NC (March 7, 2023) – The Southern HUNTERSVILLE, NC (March 7, 2023) – The Southern Professional Hockey League (SPHL) announced today that Michael Moran of the Quad City Storm has been named the Warrior/SPHL Player of the Week for February, 28-March 5.


Moran scored three goals, tallied two assists, and was +1, and helped lead Quad City to a 2-1 record against Pensacola last week.


On Thursday, Moran picked up an assist on the Storm’s only goal of the game as they dropped the series opener to Pensacola by a score of 4-1. On Saturday, Moran showed up in the clutch, netting the game-winner in overtime as he helped Quad City erase a 2-0 deficit as they defeated the Ice Flyers 3-2. In Sunday’s matinee, Moran capped off his five-point week, scoring his second and third goals of the weekend. The first came in the second period with 9:26 left, his second goal of the game would knot the score at 4-4 with 7:07 remaining in the third period before Quad City would eventually win in a shootout 5-4.
 

The Milford, MA native leads the Storm with 18 goals to go along with his team-best 30 points. This is Moran’s second Warrior/SPHL Player of the Week award this season.

HUNTERSVILLE, NC (March 1, 2023) – The Southern HUNTERSVILLE, NC (March 1, 2023) – The Southern Professional Hockey League (SPHL) announced today that Justin MacDonald of the Knoxville Ice Bears has been named the Warrior/SPHL Player of the Month for February.

MacDonald tallied 16 points, nine goals, seven assists, and had a +7 rating over nine games played for the Ice Bears last month.

MacDonald recorded a point in each of the nine games he appeared in during the month, including five multi-point performances. MacDonald scored two goals in three separate games against Birmingham last month, with two of those three games resulting in wins. The Knoxville center-man is chasing the Ice Bears franchise record for points in a single season held by Kevin Swider (106 pts). The Newmarket, ON native currently leads the SPHL in points (72), goals (32), and assists (40). All of which are career highs. He is also the only player in the league to reach 70+ points this season. This is the second consecutive Player of the Month award for MacDonald, becoming only the second player to ever win back-to-back Player of the Month awards, joining Kevin Swider (Knoxville, February/March 2009-10).

MacDonald has helped lead Knoxville into a tie for fourth in the SPHL standings, just four points behind second place, and 12 points back from league leaders Peoria.

The Southern Professional Hockey League (SPHL) announced today that Rhett Kingston of the Macon Mayhem has been named the Warrior/SPHL Player of the Week for February, 20-26.

Kingston scored five goals, was +1, and helped lead Macon to a 2-1 record last week.

On Friday, Kingston scored the only goal of the game for the Mayhem late in the third period as they fell to the Storm 3-1. On Saturday, Kingston was unstoppable as he found the back of the net three times for his first SPHL hat trick. His first of three goals sparked a comeback for the Mayhem as it was the start of five straight for the Mayhem. His second tally, a power play goal, tied things at three before he would close out his special performance with the game-winning goal in the third period as the Mayhem held on for a 5-4 victory over the Storm. In Sunday’s matinee, Kingston capped off his five-point week, scoring his fifth goal of the weekend with 2:15 left in the opening period as the Mayhem cruised past Pensacola by a final of 7-4.
 
The Okotoks, AB native leads the Mayhem with 17 goals to go along with his team-best 25 points. This is Macon’s second Warrior/SPHL Player of the Week award this season (Josh Benson).
