NEWSDate: Nov 28, 2009 Pensacola Overcomes Surge 6-5 In Shootout
The Ice Flyers won a thriller in a shootout Friday night, topping the Mississippi Surge 6-5. After a 5-5 tie ended regulation, both teams came up empty in overtime. In the ensuing shutout the Ice Flyers prevailed 3-1 and claimed the victory. Kevin Galan scored the game's first goal just 24 seconds into the game, and Rob Campbell followed up with one of his own a little more than a minute later. However, Mississippi's Matt Zultek added to his lead league in power play goals with his ninth of the year at 3:30 in the first period. During the first intermission a major discovery was made: Zamboni machines and t-shirts don't mix. After a promotional t-shirt giveaway left a stray t-shirt on the ice, the Civic Center Zamboni rolled over the shirt and promptly stopped working. After a lengthy delay, the t-shirt was removed from the Zamboni, and the second period was played. Mississippi struck first in the new period, as Andrew Boudreau found the net at 5:35. The next goal would belong to Pensacola, however, as Chris Rebernik scored his eighth goal of the year on assists by Lorne Misita and Kevin Galan. Mississippi surged back with two goals to take a 4-3 lead on Zultek's second goal of the night and Chris Greene's first. Rob Campbell tied the game up at four apiece with his second goal before the end of the second period. Just two and a half minutes elapsed into the third period when Steve Weidlich scored a power play goal for Mississippi. For the majority of the third period the game seemed to belong to the Surge, until Chris Rebernik scored his second goal and third point of the night to tie the game at five with fewer than five minutes left in regulation. The five minute sudden-death overtime period came and went, and both teams set up for a shootout. After Mississippi's goalie Bill Zaniboni faced a total of 54 shots in the game, the Surge seemed to have the advantage. Indeed, Tim Velemirovich slid the puck past Chad Collins in the first attempt, and Rob Campbell was thwarted by Zaniboni. But the next three Surge shooters were turned away, and Erik Stoyanovich, Lorne Misita, and Chris Rebernik all had successful passes for Pensacola to seal the shootout three to one and give the Ice Flyers a 6-5 win. The Ice Flyers return to action in Pensacola tomorrow night as they host the IceGators on Saturday at 7:05 p.m. Great seats are still available, and as part of Military Appreciation all fans with a military I.D. receive $2 off a regularly priced admission ticket.
