Shorthanded Ice Flyers prove mettle

Adversity seems to be strengthening the resolve of the Pensacola Ice Flyers.

Shorthanded without team captain Leo Thomas and defenseman Brad Cooper, both suspended by the league office following Friday’s road game, the Ice Flyers twice rallied for a 5-2 victory Saturday night against Louisiana to complete a weekend sweep of the first-place IceGators.

In delighting a crowd of 4,116 at the Pensacola Bay Center, the Ice Flyers moved within a point of Louisiana atop the Southern Professional Hockey League standings heading into the final seven weeks of the season. The Ice Flyers won 2-1 Friday in an overtime shootout at Louisiana.

“We are a resilient group,” said left winger Ryan Salvis, who had the biggest game Saturday with two goals and two assists. “We never give up. If we can play like that every day, we are going to go real far.

“We were missing a few guys (Thomas and Cooper) who were offensive guys and everybody bought into the defensive side and we came out with a big win. Right now we are playing really well as a team.”
