HUNTSVILLE, AL - The Knoxville Ice Bears had trouble finding ways to stop the Huntsville Havoc, which beat Ice Bears, 5-1.
Brent Tamane was all over the ice for Huntsville, as he tallied two goals and one assist in the win. Tamane scored the first of his two goals at 2:55 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Huntsville. Nick Lazorko picked up the assist. Tamane's next tally made the score 3-1 Huntsville with 10:10 left in the second period. Brett Liscomb provided the assist.
Knoxville was stymied by the Havoc netminder Dan McWhinney, who stopped 43 shots during the victory. McWhinney certainly lowered his goals against average, which was 2.5 entering the contest.
The Huntsville penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled seven minors and three majors for 49 minutes in penalty time. The Havoc surpassed its season average of 26.0 penalty minutes per game. Huntsville put 24 shots on net during the contest, more than the 19.2 it averages per game. The Havoc bested their season scoring average. Huntsville has scored at the pace of 2.4 goals per game during the current campaign.
Huntsville also got points from Justin Fox, who also had one goal and one assist. Aaron McGill also scored for Huntsville. In addition, Huntsville received assists from Leland Fidler, who had one and Stuart Stefan, who had two.
The Ice Bears racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with four minors and three majors for 33 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 20.0 minutes per game Knoxville had been spending in the box. The Ice Bears could not produce up to they normal offensive output. Knoxville averages 3.1 goals per game. The defense for the Ice Bears played an important role offensively, racking up 18 shots on goal. The Havoc were unable to stop Knoxville from sending pucks towards the net, and the Ice Bears eventually piled up 44 shots on goal.
Knoxville was led by Brendan Taylor, who scored the team's only goal. Taylor scored on the power play 7:10 into the second period to make the score 2-1 Huntsville. The Ice Bears had gained a power play chance when Liscomb was whistled for high sticking. Tyler Fernandez picked up the assist.
