The Pensacola Ice Flyers generated plenty of scoring chances Thursday night against the Columbus Cottonmouths.

But they got little reward.

It turned into another frustrating home loss, a 4-1 setback that got a three-game stretch off to a rough start at the Bay Center. The Ice Flyers outshot Columbus 39-21, but couldn’t capitalize.

“We had clean looks at the net. We have to find a way to get the puck in the net,” said Ice Flyers coach Gary Graham. “That’s what it comes down to.”

The loss put a somber tone on Graham’s 34th birthday Thursday. He did light into a smile as a few Ice Flyers fans came into the locker room tunnel to sing a Happy Birthday message.

The team travels today to face the Louisiana IceGators, the first-place team in the Southern Professional Hockey League. The two teams meet again Saturday night at the Bay Center.

Given Thursday’s loss, it ramps up the importance of getting points out of this weekend.
