Columbus ends Ice Flyers' home win streak

Matt Gingera produced a hat trick, including the game-winning goal in the third period, as the Columbus Cottomouths defeated the Pensacola Ice Flyers 4-2 Friday night at the Bay Center.

The Ice Flyers took a 2-1 lead after the first period, but were unable to get another shot past Columbus goaltender Andrew Loewen, who stopped 32 of 34 shots.

One of the newcomers to the Ice Flyers’ roster, Justin MacDonald, scored the team’s second goal with seven minutes left in the first period. But Gingera tied the game when converting a 2 on 1 break in the second period, then got the game winner with 13:22 remaining.

The Cottonmouths got their final goal when Levi Lind scored on an empty net, just as Ice Flyers goaltender Gerry Festa was trying to leave for the extra attacker.

The Ice Flyers will host the Mississippi Surge on Saturday. The game will feature the fourth annual “Wiener Dog Races” after the first period.
