BILOXI -- The Mississippi Surge executed well and played enough team defense to shut out the Mississippi RiverKings 2-0 on Wednesday night in the Mississippi Coast Coliseum.
Kiefer Smiley was the star of the game. He had 31 saves to give his team a victory before they take to the road for a three-game weekend.
Both teams had a sluggish start, but with 1:59 remaining in the first period, the Surge got on the scoreboard. Their goal came when Payden Benning picked up the rebounded shot of B.J. Crum and stuffed it into the net.
In the second period, the Surge scored on one of their three power-play opportunities.
Soon after the period was under way, the RiverKings were charged with-cross checking. The Surge's Brandon Kosolofsky quickly capitalized by taking a long pass from Crum and slipping it past goalie Matthew Krahn for the 2-0 lead.
