BILOXI-- The Mississippi Surge's first home game in December was marred by a 3-2 loss to the Fayetteville FireAntz on Friday night at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum.
The Surge shot out to a quick 1-0 lead just 47 seconds in with a goal by Jeff Grant. But the FireAntz answered before the end of the first with a tying goal by Mike Gurtler at the 18:18 mark.
The Surge created ample scoring opportunities for early on, but they couldn't find the net.
With the Surge at a 5-3 disadvantage, Gurtler got his second goal of the night at 15:41 in the second for a 2-1 FireAntz lead.
Despite the urgency at hand, it was the FireAntz who came out fired up in the third period. When the Surge's Tommy Lange got the crowd ignited with a hit that sent Corey Toy hobbling to the bench, he was called for boarding.
Two seconds later, Brian Elser took the faceoff from Josh McQuade and hit the net for a 3-1 FireAntz lead.
