The Mississippi Surge are returning to their home ice this weekend after a three-week road trip, hoping to avoid the sting of the first place Fayetteville FireAntz.
The Surge host Fayetteville on both Friday and Saturday at 7:05 p.m.
The Surge's road trip lent limited access to ice for practices. At times, they resorted to street hockey to stay sharp. Still, they managed to go 4-2 during the trip. They're coming off a 2-1 overtime win over the Augusta Riverhawks.
Coach Jeff Bes said the trip was a bonding experience for the players.
"The group came together, and team unity is a big thing when you want to play well and know the guys are going to be there for you," Bes said. "It's exciting to see them growing in light of the hockey aspect."
The FireAntz team they will face this weekend are alone in first place with a record of 12-4-0. The FireAntz lost their last three games and will be hungry for a win. It will be the first time the two teams meet this season.
