Ice Flyers win 2-1 over Huntsville

on Dec 08, 2012

Pensacola, Fla. - After coming off their eighth straight road win on Thursday night, the Pensacola Ice Flyers looked to change their fortune on home ice as they met the Huntsville Havoc at the Pensacola Bay Center. It was a game that had an old-time hockey feel to it, and one that saw the Ice Flyers win 2-1 and outshoot the Havoc, 51-23.

The first period for the Ice Flyers was one of their best on home ice this season as they came in waves, peppering the Havoc goalie with 15 shots on goals. However, with Huntsville only getting 5 shots in the first, the score remained tied, 0-0.

A few minutes into the second period, the old-time hockey feel brought the Pensacola crowd to life. Brad Cooper for the Havoc got his team on the board 3:22 into the period. Not even a few minutes later on an Ice Flyers power play, Jordan Chong got the puck past Havoc's goalie Dan McWhinney to tie the score.

Then came an onslaught of roughing minors and fighting majors that had the crowd on their feet in celebration. Both teams battled hard and put on a gritty hockey game, and set the stage for what turned out to be a hard-fought third period.

Pensacola Ice Flyers' Brent Sands scored to break the tie and put his team ahead 2-1. But immediately after the goal was scored, another fight broke out. Pensacola kept the pressure on, firing 17 more shots on McWhinney. But the Havoc were not finished quite yet. After killing a four-minute penalty, they began to control the play in the Ice Flyers' zone, testing goalie Steve Christie to the final horn.

With the win on home ice, the Ice Flyers improved to 10-4-2. They sit alone in second place, only two points behind Fayetteville. The Havoc fall to 4-10-1 on the season.

The Havoc's next game is Saturday, Dec. 8 at 7:05 p.m. at the Landers Center as they play the Mississippi RiverKings. The Pensacola Ice Flyers will play the Louisiana IceGators on Friday, Dec.14 at the Pensacola Bay Center at 7:05 p.m. It is Tacky Christmas Sweater Night and Giveaway Night with over $10,000 in prizes given away throughout the game.
