The Columbus Cottonmouths knew they were in for a big test when the first-place Fayetteville FireAntz arrived in town for a weekend series.

The Snakes passed the first test with flying colors, earning a 2-1 victory in Game 1. The rematch is Saturday night at 7:30.

The Antz lost their second straight game and only their third all season. After an early loss to Huntsville, Fayetteville reeled off eight consecutive wins before losing in a shocker to last-place Augusta on Thursday night. The Snakes snapped a season-long three-game losing streak and won for the first time at home against the Antz.

Earlier in the week, Snakes forward John Sullivan noted that, though the Fire

Antz were off to a quick start and the Snakes were struggling, the home team would not be intimidated by Fayetteville.

The Snakes' determination was evident from the start of the game. Though the Cottonmouths have struggled offensively all season, they drew first blood.

Co-captain Sam Bowles took a shot midway through the first period, got his own rebound and buried it.
