SOUTHAVEN, Miss.-- Propelled by three power play goals, the Mississippi RiverKings got back in the win column Saturday night as they knock off the reigning SPHL Champions, the Columbus Cottonmouths, 4-3 Saturday at the Landers Center.
Columbus wasted no time getting on the board. Just three minutes into the game , Brett Hammond beat David Wilson left side from a rebound off the boards. Brett Hammond then netted his second of the night at the 8:33 mark off another bouncing rebound out in front to put the Snakes up by two.
The "˜Kings soon cut the lead by one when Darrell Stoddard picked up Patrick Gaul's shot and hammered it in just a minute in a half after Hammond's second goal as the RiverKings went into the first intermission down by one.
The RiverKings powerplay came alive in the second period as Jeremy Dawes picked up Gaul's rebound in front of Cottonmouth's goaltender Ian Vigier to tie the game at two.
Scary moment in the second as Derek Pallardy took a hip check from Patrick Gaul and fell awkwardly on the ice face-first. Pallardy remained motionless on the ice while team trainers attended to the Snakes' forward. Pallardy was removed from the ice via stretcher, but was conscious and talking with doctors and teammates during the second intermission.
After the check, each player on the ice found a partner as a mass scrum ensued. At the end, RiverKings' Captain Darrell Stoddard was assessed a game misconduct for third man in, Gaul five for fighting and Bailer five for fighting and two minutes for instigating, putting the RiverKings on the power play.
The RiverKings capitalized with their second power play goal on the night. Just eight seconds into the power play, Ian Finnerty redirected a shot from Andrew Randazzo to bring the "˜Kings lead to 3-2.
Both teams added a goal in the third period. The "˜Kings netted their third power play goal of the night when Jeremy Dawes' shot found the stick of Matt Whitehead for the redirect 4:29 mark of the final frame giving the "˜Kings a 4-2 lead. Columbus would then cut the lead by one when Alex MacLeod picked up a rebound to beat Wilson left side, but the RiverKings were able to hang on to a 4-3 victory snapping a three-game home losing streak.
David Wilson (3-1-1) picked up the win stopping 24 of 27 shots on net. Ian Vigier (1-5-1) suffered the loss, saving 22 of 26 shots on goal.
