BILOXI -- The Columbus Cottonmouths proved to be a little too much for the Mississippi Surge at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum on Friday night as they used strong defense to edge out a 3-2 win.
The Cottonmouth defense was super early on and held the Surge to just one shot through the first 13 minutes and just three shots in the first period. That gave the Cottonmouth offense many scoring opportunities, and at 13:14 Jordan Braid slipped one just inside the right pipe for a 1-0 lead.
The Surge came to life in the second period. Tommy Lange was taken down as he headed to the goal. He scored on the ensuing penalty shot to tie it for the Surge at 9:35.
After some impressive defense, the Surge's Shawn Skelly took the puck and traveled unassisted to the net and gave Mississippi the 2-1 lead.
