RiverKings Move Into Top Spot in Win Over Louisiana

SOUTHAVEN, Miss. – The Mississippi RiverKings extended their record 3-0-0 to take the top spot in the SPHL after defeating the Louisiana Ice Gators 5-2.

The RiverKings got the scoring started at the 16:54 mark of the first period as Ian Finnerty’s goal gave the ‘Kings a 1-0 lead. Tyler Sheldrake extended the lead to two with a blast from the point to beat Riley Gill as the RiverKings entered the second intermission ahead 2-0.

The IceGators battled back early in the third. Former RiverKing Matt Miller scored on a penalty shot, beating Matthew Krahn to cut the lead to two after Paul Kurceba took Miller down on a breakaway. The goal ended Krahn’s shutout streak at 100 minutes. Louisiana came back to tie the game 2-2 at the 6:57 mark of the third period with a goal from Robert Short, assisted by Eric Tallent.

But the RiverKings powered through the third period, scoring three unanswered goals. Finnerty’s second goal, a deflection off of a Tyler Sheldrake shot, at the 13:10 mark of the third period gave the RiverKings the lead. Todd Hosmer connected with Jeremy Dawes on a two-on-one as the RiverKings rookie netted his first goal of his career at the 14:52 mark of the third. Darrell Stoddard solidified the victory with an empty net goal as the ‘Kings moved to 3-0-0 on the young season.
