SOUTHAVEN, Miss. – The Mississippi RiverKings extended their record 3-0-0 to take the top spot in the SPHL after defeating the Louisiana Ice Gators 5-2.
The RiverKings got the scoring started at the 16:54 mark of the first period as Ian Finnerty’s goal gave the ‘Kings a 1-0 lead. Tyler Sheldrake extended the lead to two with a blast from the point to beat Riley Gill as the RiverKings entered the second intermission ahead 2-0.
The IceGators battled back early in the third. Former RiverKing Matt Miller scored on a penalty shot, beating Matthew Krahn to cut the lead to two after Paul Kurceba took Miller down on a breakaway. The goal ended Krahn’s shutout streak at 100 minutes. Louisiana came back to tie the game 2-2 at the 6:57 mark of the third period with a goal from Robert Short, assisted by Eric Tallent.
But the RiverKings powered through the third period, scoring three unanswered goals. Finnerty’s second goal, a deflection off of a Tyler Sheldrake shot, at the 13:10 mark of the third period gave the RiverKings the lead. Todd Hosmer connected with Jeremy Dawes on a two-on-one as the RiverKings rookie netted his first goal of his career at the 14:52 mark of the third. Darrell Stoddard solidified the victory with an empty net goal as the ‘Kings moved to 3-0-0 on the young season.
Matt Krahn picked up his second win for the RiverKings, stopping 22 of 24 shots on goal. Louisiana IceGators Riley Gill took his first loss this season, turning away 21 of 25 shots on net in the loss.
The RiverKings take the road for the first away game of the season tomorrow night as they battle the Mississippi Surge.
