Craigen Trying To Solve Issues At Goalie

By Dave Link, Knoxville News Sentinel

Goalie concerns soared even higher Thursday for the Knoxville Ice Bears.

Rookie Jesse Kallechy was left as the Ice Bears' only goalie when Nick Niedert was called up to Elmira (N.Y.) of the East Coast Hockey League.

Ice Bears coach Mike Craigen spent Thursday in search of another goalie for tonight's Southern Professional Hockey League game against Fayetteville in the Civic Coliseum. Game time is 7:30.

"I'm doing what I can do," Craigen said after the morning skate. "I can't go out back and pluck (a goalie) off a tree, so we're working with what we've got right now."

Niedert, who first played in the SPHL in 2004-05, signed with the Ice Bears on Jan. 10 as the team tried to solidify its goaltending with the departure of No. 1 goalie Bryan Hince, called up to Greenville of the ECHL on Dec. 30.

Before leaving, Hince was 16-1-0 with the Ice Bears and on pace to break the SPHL's record for goalie wins in a season (28) set by Terry Denike of the Florida Seals in 2005-06.

Hince's last game with Knoxville was a 5-1 victory over Augusta on Dec. 29 that left the Ice Bears with a 19-5 record and in first place in the SPHL.

Now, the Ice Bears (22-9-2) are second in the SPHL with 46 points, five points behind Augusta (24-8-3) and three points ahead of Columbus (19-10-5).
