Havoc Still Trying To Get Straight As Season Nears Home Stretch

By Bill Bryant, The Huntsville Times

HUNTSVILLE, Alabama -- Win, loss. Win, loss.

That's how the season started for the Huntsville Havoc. And that's pretty much where it has remained in the interim.

For a franchise where fast starts have been the norm over the past three years, the Havoc's 14-17-3 record heading into tonight's home game at 7:30 against Louisiana is certainly out of character.

Huntsville is in sixth place in the nine-team Southern Professional Hockey League. The Havoc are five points out of fourth place and five points ahead of eighth.

That fits the definition of mediocrity in anyone's dictionary.

"We're below my goal," Huntsville coach Randy Murphy said. "But I'm a firm believer that the guys we have here are willing to still work toward that, and that is first and foremost for me. To their credit, the effort's there every night."

Consistency, on the other hand, has been another matter altogether (the team has winning streaks of three and four games, losing streaks of four and five games). There's more than one explanation for the lack of it.

Murphy came into the season with a talented, yet inexperienced bunch. As many as 12 rookies have been on the 18-man roster.

There have been player departures for the usual reasons (promotions) and the not-as-usual ones (personal). But that happens every year at every level of pro hockey.
