FireAntz Stop Losing Skid, Beat Knoxville Ice Bears 6-3

By Jaclyn Shambaugh, Fayetteville Observer

Fayetteville halted its recent slide in dominant fashion Tuesday night with a 6-3 win over visiting Knoxville at the Crown Coliseum.

The win was the first for the FireAntz in five games. The loss stretched the Ice Bears' losing streak to three.

"We did a lot of things differently tonight," Antz coach Sean Gillam said. "The game plan was to get pucks on net, be aggressive in our zone and try not to turn the puck over."

Using the game plan, the Antz opened play with a barrage of shot, out-shooting the Bears 7-1 - without success - before a timeout with 12:47 left in the period.

The FireAntz took an early lead on a short-handed goal by right wing Mike Forgie, who got the puck near the Antz goal and skated the distance to punch it past Knoxville goalie Nick Nie-dert with 10:49 left in the first period.

Forgie's goal preceded another stint of scoreless hockey before Knoxville's Kevin Swider scored with 4:02 left in the first.

The tie was short-lived, as the Antz answered just over a minute later when Josh McQuade scored, assisted by Rob Sich and Kyle Frieday. The goal, scored with 2:51 left, gave the Antz a 2-1 lead at the first intermission.

The Antz increased the lead in the second period, with Kyle McNeill, Chris Leveille and Jesse Biduke scoring.

McNeill struck first, scoring from just outside the crease, less less two minutes into the period.

"I just pretty much give the puck to Sich and Leveille and let them do the work while I drive the net," McNeill said. "The puck happened to go in the corner. I saw Lev and called his name. He hit me, backdoor. Boom."
