SPHL Officiating Camp - Day Five Blog

By Phil Brand

Butch Johnson, Chairman of the Board of the United States Hockey League the only Tier One Junior League in the US visited the camp and provided an overview of the expectations for officials from the perspective of team management and owners. He spoke about this league’s objectives especially in the area of player, coaches and officiating development. He concluded his session by taking and answering a series of questions that helped participants understand the long-range operational goals of the ownership.

Video CD recordings of each individual official continued as it has all camp during the morning two hour ice session. The CD is combined with the individual evaluations of each participant by the instructors/supervisors on their test results, observations of their work ethic and contributions in all training camp activities.  In turn this information is combined to produce a profile of individual camp results. These results are used in the exit interviews that will be held tomorrow on the last day of camp. The combined material and results are evaluated collectively by the staff and used as part of the feedback on areas of strengths and areas requiring improvement.  The overall performance at camp is also used as the basis for the first month’s schedule of game assignments.

Sunday afternoon featured a number of presentations on the final sections of the rulebook and the use of communications and interactions with coaches, game and team officials.  Other schedule time was devoted to the ODP and USA Hockey expectations on off-ice conduct. Sessions on schedule travel, financial, and personal management covered a variety of situations and requirements.

The evening session featured another two hours of ice time stressing the review of the power skating techniques and conditioning drills presented throughout the sessions and competitive on-ice contests among participants. The evening session ended about 9:30 PM after discussions on various options on community involvement during the season and a series of competitive team exercises.
