NEWSDate: Sep 05, 2010 SPHL Officiating Camp - Day Four BlogBy Phil Brand Steve Tatro, USA Hockey Referee-in-Chief, Minnesota District joined the camp staff Saturday Morning to assists of camp participants. Tatro has spent 31 seasons as a top amateur and collegiate official. He is responsible for approximately 2900 officials in Minnesota. Seven of the camp participants started officiating in the Minnesota District. Additionally two retired officials who between them worked more than sixty years of hockey at the junior professional and international level dropped by the lend their support. A 7:45 AM start launched sessions where physical activity dominated most of this day with three hours of on-ice time spent on flow drills and off-ice physical fitness testing. Off the ice each official was required to complete a two-mile timed run, multiple sets of continuous 40 yard sprints that must all be completed within an acceptable time range and core holds which judge the strength of the core of the body. The core of the body is the area that helps with balance and control for skating and physical activity. The afternoon session concluded with a series of on-ice tests and contests that provide camp evaluators with other measures for evaluation. The evening session was devoted to team building exercises and individual and group discussions on game situations, individual experiences and as well as the history of the various leagues that work with the ODP in terms of their structure, goals and objectives as part of an evening social event that ended at 10:00 PM.
