Ice Bears End Losing Streak, 7-5

By Nick Gates, Knoxville News Sentinel

The Knoxville Ice Bears returned to their winning ways at home, avoiding an unprecedented five-game losing streak at Civic Coliseum.

David Segal whacked a rebound past Fayetteville goalie Guy St. Vincent - the Knoxville enforcer's second goal of the game - and Kevin Swider scored his 37th goal into an empty net with 25 seconds to go to give the Ice Bears a 7-5 come-from-behind win over the FireAntz on Friday night.

"We're not going to win in the playoffs giving up five goals," Knoxville coach Marc Rodgers said. "It was the same old things we've talked about for a few weeks - we're taking penalties and not moving the puck out of our zone. All those things came back but the good thing is we rebounded."

Mark Van Vliet, Frank Furdero, Taylor Hustead and newcomer Kyle Bochek also scored for the Ice Bears (26-21-3), who snapped a four-game losing streak and moved into fourth place a point ahead of Pensacola.

Rob Sich scored a pair of goals for Fayetteville (30-19-2), giving the Southern Professional Hockey League MVP candidate a single-season record 58.

Chris Leveille, Steve Cooke and Jesse Biduke also scored for the FireAntz, who have yielded 14 goals in their last two games. They lost 7-1 at Huntsville on Thursday.

The FireAntz need to rebound in the rematch tonight in Knoxville or they can kiss their regular-season hopes away. They are six points behind first-place Mississippi with five games remaining.
