Ice Flyers Lose Lead To Surge

By Mac Knefely, Pensacola News Journal

The Pensacola Ice Flyers bemoaned another missed opportunity on home ice.

Leading 2-0 late in the second period, the Ice Flyers saw it slip away in a 3-2 loss against the Mississippi Surge, disappointing a crowd of 5,322 on "Star Wars Night" at the Pensacola Civic Center.

"We played a perfect game the first two periods, but in the third, instead of playing to win, we played afraid to lose," said Ice Flyers coach Todd Gordon, whose team beat the Surge 3-2 on Thursday night in Biloxi.

"After having all that composure and coverage in our zone, we started running around and didn't have poise with the puck, and started turning it over,'' Gordon said. "That's something we hadn't done in the previous five periods. We had a great game last night, and tonight we played a great game, but it just kind of snowballed on us.''

Mississippi broke a 2-2 tie with six minutes remaining when Matt Zultek scored a power-play goal off assists from Steve Weidlich and Chris Greene.

But momentum began to swing toward the Surge late in the second period. Tim Velemirovich cut the Ice Flyers lead with just over two minutes left in the second period as he scored while falling down.
