NEWSDate: Feb 06, 2010 Surge Move Into First-Place Tie In SPHLBy Aimee Hester, Biloxi Sun Herald BILOXI- Motivated by wearing the traditional Mardi Gras colors of purple, green and gold, the Mississippi Surge defeated Knoxville 6-2 on Friday night at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum. The Surge (21-10-7) are now tied with Huntsville for first place. They are 16-4 at home. Tim Velemirovich led the Surge with four goals, scoring twice with 45 seconds of the first period. Knoxville answered back with goals at 2:06 from Travis Martell and at 2:44 from Travis Hanson, tying the game at 2-2. Mississippi regained the lead when Chris Greene and Velemirovich scored in the second period for a 4-2 advantage. Twenty-five seconds into the third period, Matt Zultek scored his 24th power-play goal of the season. Velemirovich capped the scoring when he hammered home Matthew Larke's centering pass at the 16:00 mark of the third for his fourth goal of the evening and 21st of the year. "This is the first time in my pro career that I've scored 4 goals in a game,'' Velemirovich said. "I think Knoxville was tired, both mentally and physically. They just didn't seem prepared." Bill Zaniboni made 25 saves for the Surge, and Mississippi went 2-for-12 on the power play. "In response to the way they played, and the penalties they took, early in the game we put ourselves in a better position," Surge coach Steffon Walby said. "Their game plan, whatever it was, didn't work." The Surge will not play at home again until Feb. 26 when they meet the Fayetteville FireAntz.
